“Before that some of us were sitting round the fire in 6 with the Countess, and Mrs Gallagher brought in a reporter & a big Canadian Khaki soldier – whom she & he wished to introduce to the Countess, but behold, she wouldn’t shake hands with him. I think it was great cheek to bring him there, but Miss Power of the Cove, & probably Mrs Gallagher thought she was very severe.”

Monday 3rd. – I went to the Tech & to town, & got a 1914 volume of Punch.

Tuesday 6th Feb, Thursday. – There was a Cumann na mban meeting – often to other women too; at, in the committee room at the Town Hall, to hear Countess Plunkett speak. She was to do a public lecture that evening. She spoke very briefly in the afternoon. Aunt H. & I went; I had to second the vote of thanks, which Mrs Phelan, being chairman, proposed. Mrs Hayden also spoke very well. Countess P

said there is great danger that when they go to make conscription permanent in England they will try it here again. I went on to the hotel, where there was to be a tea, and there were about 30 of us at a long table in the coffee room.
