“Anna Bell and Mrs Williams came to afternoon tea, and Henry Bell also. Anna says she finds Catholics more reliable and truthful than Protestants – meaning poor Protestants, I think, and confining it to the poor of both sects I expect it is true. It seems Jessie is getting up a prayer meeting to pray for knowledge of what the Lord wishes for Ireland. Mrs Williams was rather enthusiastic about it – I think all Protestant sects are invited to it. “

Monday 9th. – No girl came so I went to both registry offices & the labour exchange & came back to find one called May Butler just come from the Waterside office. She was a civilised grown up sort of person, who had been house maid in a hotel, & a vast improvement on Stasia and Anne. I took Louis out & minded him for a while at St Declan’s after.

Friday 13th. – Ellie came back and May left. A great sense of peace and relief, though May was very good. Aunt H. was better too, but Billy’s sore paw kept on and on.
Saturday 14th. – I went to St Declan’s after tea to see Doreen who was to have tea there on her way to Tráit Mór for a week. She was very genial and pleasant, and talked a lot about the military hospital in Cork where she works as a V.A.D. clerk. They gets rides in the military motor ambulance when it goes long journeys, and they have dances and concerts. But they talk a dreadful military slang. She says Joe and Miss Cr [sp?] haven’t fixed their wedding day yet – Miss C. is going to some job in England for a while. Doreen likes her pretty well, but would rather keep her father herself.
