“Maya & I went up to London & spent the remainder of the morning at Selfridges, after a fruitless attempt to visit Helen Webb. It’s a wonderful place, but the assistants have the haughty manner that terrifies me in shops & I do hate being always called madam. I bought a cotton gown & a nightgown & a pair of knickers. We dined there & were badly robbed. “

WEEK 131: (17th – 22nd May 1920)

“I went to the Coliseum to see Her Barrier was objectionable enough to complain to the theatre committee about – Miss Doyle had been telling D. – it was awful. It was rather beastly, & such rot! But there was a comic one before it where three men were killed & went to hell & were shut into a pit of fire by devils with huge red hot pitchforks, which was lovely.”

WEEK 113: (5th – 11th January 1920)

“I went to St. Declan’s a.d. to mind Louis while Dorothea went canvassing with Mrs Hayden. He was out with Miss Nesbitt, but came in soon, and was very cross and miserable for a long time. I told D. of the communications I had had from her mother mostly about her children & their likeness to her, which she said were quite true – that she was like her in eyes & mind, & suffered for want of an interest in his life & that Tony was very little changed since she left them. D. had been trying to write, but could not, so I brought her the Ouija board.”

“She said that Seán O Floinn told her I was going to publish a book – I was a good deal horrified to find he knew. I found D. and T. had told him, & was partly pleased to have them in the wrong towards me for once – doing something silly that they had to apologize for, instead of the other way round.”

WEEK 87: (7th – 13th July 1919)

“Lovely hot day. Dorothea & Louis & Tony went to Cork by the 19.50 train, the former to stay at Redclyffe. Stephen & Ben were both coming down the following Saturday. There was a committee a.t., and O’Mahony the organiser was there in a rather disagreeable & bumptious mood, rebuking us for not having 3 times the membership & being very unhelpful towards solving the problem of how Brazil is to do his duty to the county and at the same time give his whole time to registration work, which seems to be urgently necessary, Brazil doesn’t know what to do, & apparently works 7 days a week.”
